Frequently Asked Questions
How many people can I fit inside a marquee?
This will depend on the size and style of marquee you hire. See our ultimate guide to marquee hire here for more information.
How much space will I need to leave around the marquee?
There needs to be a minimum off 1.5m around the marquee to accommodate for the straps, pegs, or weights.
Please note: If you are hiring a Peg & Pole Marquee, this marquee can only be pegged and it is not able to be weighted.
Can I set up a marquee myself?
No. Due to the safety requirements of the marquees, we will need to ensure this is installed and packed down by our experienced team.
Is there a clear roof option?
No, the only roof options for the marquees is solid white.
How deep do the pegs go into the ground?
The pegs go into the ground by at least 1m, so we will need to make sure there is no pipe work under this space. In most cases, weights are easier to work with and avoid breaking underground pipes.
How do you weigh the marquee down?
We use either concrete weights or pegs. This will depend on the type of marquee you hire and the location.
How do I know what size marquee I need?
There are a number of factors to consider when deciding on marquee size, including:
- Number of guests
- If you are planning to have a dance floor
- If you are planning to have a bar set up
- How much furniture you plan to have
- If you are using large decorations
- Entertainment – a band or DJ will need significant space
- If you are having catering

Do I need a permit to have a marquee?
This is dependent on what country/state you live in. In most cases, for private events on private properties, you will not need a permit in Australia. However, depending on the size of your marquee and if you are using it in a public space, you might require a permit.
Get in contact us for more information if you are unsure on whether you need a permit for your marquee.
Can I have a marquee in a public space?
In Melbourne, you will need permission from the local or state governments to set up a marquee in a public space (depending on where it is). Again, for more information you can contact our office.
Do marquees cause damage to the ground?
If set up on grass, you may see some temporary damage from the marquee depending on what flooring is used. If set up on concrete, it is unlikely that there will be any permanent damage. If you are concerned about damage, we recommend using temporary flooring in your marquee to protect the ground.
What are the flooring options for marquees?
There are a number of options for flooring for your marquee:
- Solid wood floor
- Pro floor
- Grass matting/artificial turf
If your marquee is set up on concrete or grass that is in good condition, you might not need flooring at all.
